The Top 50 Best Songs of 2013 (So Far…) – A Rock Subculture Journal Editorial

October 14, 2013 by Jason DeBord 0 Comments

Rock-Subcuture-Best-Music-Songs-2013-List-Singles-Artists-Pop-Alternative-R&B-Electronic-Dance-Favorite-Playlist-FI

This feature is really born out of my own music playlists…  I thought I would take my latest current playlist and break it down to music that was published in 2013 and limit it to 50 songs.  Also, the songs have to be off of albums that came out in 2013 (not singles released in 2013 for albums that debuted in 2012).  My only other restriction was limiting it to no more than one song per artist.  Oh, and no covers…  Included is a lot of music that I enjoy that likely include artists that some readers have never heard of, so hopefully this will result in some people finding new music and new artists.  The songs are not ranked in an order of preference, but more in a flowing, playlist style.  In any event, 2013 is a great year for new music… [Read more…]

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at The Fillmore | San Francisco, California | 4/22/2013 (Concert Review)

Black-Rebel-Motorcycle-Club-BRMC-2013-Tour-Specter-of-the-Feast-Concert-Review-Photos-Fillmore-San-Francisco-Rocksubculture

“We did something rather foolish here…” Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Robert Levon Been, reminiscing about a past performance at the historic Fillmore, in San Francisco where the band was born.  A fitting venue from which to launch their North American tour last night, supporting the new studio album, Specter At The Feast.  Robert never came back around to explain their past foolishness, but there is always a bit of mystery about this band and their music, as well as a genuine politeness, on and off stage.  In any event, Robert and co-singer/guitarist Peter Hayes and drummer Leah Shapiro did not hold back at all with their overpowering sonic performance; a virtually non-stop set clocking in at about two hours and fifteen minutes.   The hard rocking band only slowed down a little for a few acoustic numbers in the second half of the show and at the end, and later with the encore and set closer, “Lose Yourself”, which played out in a way that felt as if the building were unwinding itself like an overspun vintage pocket watch, beat by beat, with minimalist yet powerful drums that even improve on the studio recording.  But I’ve learned to expect the unexpected with this band, who take their live sets to levels only dreamed of by other artists.  It was one of those shows that felt like a special one, and I can’t imagine a better way for them to kick off what is likely to be a stellar tour.

Caprices Festival 2013 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland: 9-Day Music Artist Live Concert Event Review & Recap

Since this was a pretty special experience and International music event, I thought I would share some thoughts and photos in summary here, mostly in an effort to genuinely promote and recommend this event to those who might not have heard of it or ever considering attending themselves.  The 9-day event took place in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, a coming together of twin ski/resort towns to put on Caprices Festival, hosting dozens of musical artists spanning many different genres and styles.  I actually only ran into a couple of Americans during the nine days of concerts (both had come out from New York for Tori Amos), so I think spreading some more information about the event on a U.S.-based site might bring out more people from the United States for future incarnations of this annual event, which celebrated it’s 10th anniversary this year, which also happened to mark some big changes and growth in size and line-up. Day 7 of Caprices Festival in Crans-Montana, Switzerland… Definitely one of the strongest nights for performances, if not the strongest overall, with a really unique and stellar line-up including The Heavy, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Alice Cooper.  The theme tonight was rock and roll (though in a variety of different packages), and it was really like a triple headliner.  I also had the unique opportunity to meet with and interview two of the four bands that took to the stage at The Moon at Caprices.

The Rock Subculture Journal will be covering Caprices Festival in Crans-Montana in the Swiss Alps of Switzerland in March.  Just a few weeks away, I’ll be covering all nine nights of the annual music event, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.  Sadly, The Kills will no longer be part of the line-up due to an illness, but the organizers have added rock legend Alice Cooper to the bill.  The festival runs March 8th through the 16th, and tickets and more info can be found at the official site at www.capricesfestival.ch. Sound City Players at Hollywood Palladium | Hollywood, California | 1/31/2013 (Concert Review)

Sound-City-Players-Live-Concert-Foo-Fighters-Movie-Link-iTunes-Documentary-Dave-Grohl-Film-Premiere-Hollywood-Palladium-FIjpg

Last night Dave Grohl brought together some of his music icons from his newly released Sound City documentary on stage as part of his Sound City Players concert at the Hollywood Palladium.  The concert followed the Hollywood premiere of his film, just down the street earlier in the evening, and the legacy lived on with an epic show played before fans and VIPs in the upper levels of the packed venue.  It was nothing short of one of the most creative celebrations of rock music I’ve seen, with Stevie Nicks fronting the Foo Fighters-based group closing the night out with the powerful Fleetwood Mac hit, “Gold Dust Woman” (a track from one of the best albums of all time, Rumors, which itself is celebrating its 35th anniversary this week with a series of special reissues).  What an amazing concert, and one that will be long remembered by those in attendance at the show, which ran nearly three and a half hours.
