Ziggy Marley at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium | Grass Valley, California | 8/12/2018 (Concert Review + Photos)

August 15, 2018 by Jason DeBord

“We have to love one another.  We can always find a way.  We can always find a way”.  Ziggy Marley at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Grass Valley on Sunday night, before a crowd of people that seemed to be very receptive to his messages and ideas shared throughout his set.  Playing in support of his latest album, Rebellion Rises, Ziggy Marley brought a message that seems to run counter to the general vibe that we encounter day to day in the U.S., which I found both refreshing and timeless.  He is all about positivity and the power behind everything that is about, rather than the current climate permeating social media and the news that is more about dividing and judging one another and being intolerant.  Personally, I would choose to stand beside Ziggy Marley and celebrate his music and his message of coming together with one another, and I think that would hold true for the fans in attendance at this concert.  The show was excellent and I am really enjoying the new music, which mixes together well with his massive catalog of work as well as the handful of covers done in tribute to his father’s work as well.  Really a fantastic experience and nice escape from the day to day negativity found out in the “real” (and not so real) world.  This is definitely a tour to come out to see if it is headed to a city near you in the next couple of months.

The Psychedelic Furs at Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium | Grass Valley, California | 7/23/2017 (Concert Review + Photos)

The Psychedelic Furs aren’t too chatty on stage – they just get to work and seem to have an awesome time performing in front of their fans.  This was definitely one of my top shows of the year, and it really just made me want to see them again…  it was that amazing.  The pairing with Robyn Hitchcock was brilliant as well, and I thoroughly enjoyed both sets.  An awesome night of music in Grass Valley by The Center for the Arts.

“…I learned so much that year, about the difference between dreaming and pretending.  Dreaming is so important for all of us and helps us live our aspirations… but pretending is really just fooling yourself, lying to yourself so you don’t see the truth.  So here’s to truth, and here’s to growing up.”  Jewel, the folk/pop/country signer-songwriter, producer, poet, novelist and actress… sharing one of many life lessons she has discovered in her remarkable journey, wherein the deeply personal has at times collided with her career and success.  Creating an intimate atmosphere to a sold out crowd in Grass Valley, in the unique way only Jewel can, she had everyone captivated with not only her musical gifts but her insights based on a lifetime of experiences and challenges.  It was a remarkable show, and she always seems to drive each performance as though it might be her last…  Not only one of our most original songwriters, but one of our most talented and gifted vocalists, performing unique renditions of her songs, new and old, that at times left the crowd stunned.  Jewel put on a showcase of storytelling in the personal and captivating way in which she has built her reputation over decades now.  Those timeless songs and stories and poetry readings…  Jewel lives her life authentically, one moment out loud and the next softly… but real in all it’s various forms and emotions.
