“We gotta remember and identify and know that the only thing we gotta fear with the craziness and the madness and some of the very difficult evil things that have happened, is not to be human, is not to be cooperative, not to be looking out for one another, but to be spreading the good stuff everywhere…” Midnight Oil’s (“the Oils”) Peter Garrett, in his preface to “Put Down That Weapon”, the band’s second single off of their seminal 1987 album, Diesel and Dust. Some 30 years later, lyrics from the song and the ideas that they invoke seem as poignant as ever. The band has been mostly off the scene as Midnight Oil since they dissolved in 2002, so with their 2017 reformation and world tour, they have made an unexpected return to much acclaim and excitement. I was a huge fan of that 1987 album as it blew up in the U.S. at the time, and I had never had a chance to see them perform live until this show at Fox Theater in Oakland on Saturday night. It was nothing short of incredible, and will certainly rank as one of my favorite gigs of the year. They are touring a lot in 2017 and crossing back to cities already visited, so I give my highest recommendation to turn out for one of these events…
Veruca Salt Reunites with New Music and Concert Tour
A recently reunited Veruca Salt (with the original line-up) has made a splash with new music, releasing “The Museum of Broken Relationships” and “It’s Holy” on Record Store Day this year (which included their biggest hit, “Seether”, as a B-side and in celebration of it’s 20th anniversary. They did their first live performance in 18 years on Conan a few weeks ago, sounding as fresh as ever, and you can watch their new music video on YouTube as well. The Breeders Embark on 2nd Leg of North American Dates for ‘Last Splash’ (LSXX) 20th Anniversary Reissue & Tour
Picking up from my announcement last January about the European and UK dates by The Breeders and their celebrating the 20th anniversary of the second album, Last Splash, the band this month kicks off the North American leg of their tour, which continues on to Mexico and Australia in October. Amidst all the concert dates will be the special deluxe vinyl reissue of the album due out from 4AD on September 2nd, as well as new music coming from Kim Deal. Bat for Lashes Opens 2013 with Tour of Australia, West Coast of United States
Natasha Khan, recording and performing as Bat for Lashes, has announced a handful of dates for the start of 2013, supporting the critically acclaimed The Haunted Man, which was released late last year. January and February are host to mostly festival performances in Singapore, New Zealand, and Australia, with some concerts in California and the Pacific Northwest in April, and one date in her Native England in June. Colin Hay’s “Finding My Dance” Tour Hits Australia, West Coast of United States, United Kingdom
Colin Hay, Scottish born and best known as the front man and singer from 80s Australian band Men at Work (best known for their hits “Down Under,” “Overkill,” and “Who Can It Be Now?”), following a festival in Michigan later this month, will be touring his homeland all of February and into March, then visit some of the cities in the West in the U.S. in April, and then his trip to the UK will take him through the end of May. Shawn Colvin Tours North America and Austrailia January Through May
American singer-songwriter Shawn Colvin kicks off her 2013 tour with a series of shows at Yoshi’s in San Francisco (following a special sold out cruise) and will cover a good portion of the United States, Canada, and Australia over the coming months, including some shows with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Many of these shows will be featured at really special venues, like jazz clubs, and the Grammy-winning artist is sure to impress with her special brand of contemporary folk and popular rock music.
