Chic featuring Nile Rodgers at Fox Theater | Oakland, California | 2/20/2016 (Concert Review + Photos)

Chic-Nile-Rodgers-2016-Concert-Review-Photos-Fox-Theater-Oakland-Setlist

“I’ve got to say, you’re the funkiest crowd we’ve ever had…”  Music legend Nile Rodgers with Chic at Fox Theater in Oakland on Saturday night, playing not only through hits by Chic but number one hits Rodgers has produced over the past several decades with top, iocnic artists.  Watching Nile Rodgers and the amazing Chic on stage really underscored how he is all about collaboration; he seems to have found his purpose in life early on in bringing the best out of other artists who were truly gifted in their own right… helping them make art that transcended what either could do on their own.  Not just a beautiful way to create, but also an inspired way to go through life, bettering other people as well as yourself in the process.  And then there is that music… all of it markedly up beat and happy and optimistic.  But Nile Rodgers also appears to be a humble man on stage, and that reflects his life’s work as well, working in the background to help other artists and their songs and talent shine.  So it was quite special to see Nile Rodgers and Chic do a full concert live on stage (they will also be performing with Duran Duran in their upcoming tour).  What music, what talent, and what a way to bring it all to life in a way that makes the crowd feel that they are part of it.  Though it is early into 2016, this will certainly be one of my own favorite and most memorable shows of the year.

Rock Subculture’s Top 101 List of Alternative Christmas Songs (The Best Rock, Pop, Indie, Punk, R&B, New Wave, Modern Rock from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and Beyond)

Top-100-Best-Alternative-Christmas-Songs-New-Wave-Modern-Rock-Alternative-Indie-Rock-Pop-Hip-Hop-Best-Holiday-Music-List-70s-80s-90s-00s-FI

Everyone knows all of the classic Christmas songs, but what about those that have emerged from the Pop and Rock music world and various subgenres (New Wave, Modern Rock, Punk, Indie, R&B, Hip Hop) from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today?  Original songs and creative covers…  I think many great songs are lost to time, in that the window in which they might be heard is too small, and then many fall off of the collective pop culture radar.  So this is my attempt to put together a list of some of my favorites, though I’m sure there are many others out there that I’d love that I’m not even aware of, or have forgotten about myself.  So if you have any recommendations, please post a reader comment below. Sixto Díaz Rodríguez (“Searching for Sugar Man”) at The Warfield | San Francisco, California | 4/23/2013 (Concert Review)

Sixto-Diaz-Rodriguez-Searching-For-Sugar-Man-Live-Concert-Tour-2013-Review-Photos-Photography-Rock-Subculture

“I’m not gettin’ old. I’m gettin’ dead.” Sixto Díaz Rodríguez, at age 70, standing before an enthusiastic, sold out crowd at The Warfield in San Francisco last night. He took time away from his set of late 60s folk protest rock and some surprising covers to engage the audience, often with humor (and some of it lighthearted and self deprecating) and incredible charm. I don’t know about the rest of the crowd, but if I could have one wish granted at the show, it would probably be to go up and give him a hug. He seems to be quite a sweet character, and beaming with happiness, which was not quite what I expected having his work on rotation for the 2.5 hour drive into the city. With boots, leather pants, black shirt and coat, and his trademark hat and glasses, he stood before us like some kind of elder statesman rock star… long lost and forgotten, that he was there at all playing on stage was as much unlikely as it seemed to be a part of his destiny. Truly an incredible opportunity to experience his music live and in person, I can’t imagine anyone in the room went away anything less that ecstatic with the show.
